UPDATE!!

My principal decided to join him in a photo.

The new photograph will go in the yearbook as a way to raise awareness for American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and rescue animals like Mr. Bugglesworth and Vivienne.

Husain Abdullah was penalized for … praying? The referee ruled this “unsportsmanlike conduct, going to the ground,” which COME ON.

Going to your knees to celebrate is an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. However, there is a specific exemption for kneeling in prayer.

Obviously, the wide majority of the time the kneeling being done by a celebrating NFL player is a Christian prayer. Husain Abdullah, however, is a practicing Muslim (in fact, before signing with the Chiefs he had taken a year off from football for his pilgrimage to Mecca), so he celebrated his pick-6 tonight with the Muslim prayer.

So this should not have been a penalty. Odds are the refs didn’t even know Abdullah was a practicing Muslim/that was the Muslim prayer and just threw the flag out of instinct ‘cause the NFL is cracking down on celebrations so much these days. Still, I fully expect the NFL to release a carefully-worded apology tomorrow, and I highly doubt any Muslim prayer will be flagged as Unsportsmanlike Conduct again.
